| The Inadequacy of Willpower |
| Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you. James 4:10, HCSB You can try to dodge temptation, come up with some kind of self-talk to say, or devise some clever scheme to trick your mind into thinking about something else. But in the end, all your bluster will pop like an overblown balloon and you’ll find yourself right back in the mudhole. Take it from people who’ve been there themselves. Human willpower can accomplish a lot of things. But achieving lasting victory over your sin areas is not one of them. That’s why every Christian who’s gotten sick enough of continuing to sin eventually throws up their hands, lays down their unwieldy weapons, and starts letting God fight their battles for them, “because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). So turn a deaf ear to temptation. Repeat the Scriptures that remind you to “consider yourselves dead to sin” (Romans 6:11) and not to “give the devil a foothold” (Ephesians 4:27). The battle isn’t yours but God’s. So stay alert, sit back, and watch Him win. This Week’s Look-Up Verse This devotional is courtesy of One Minute Bible for Starters.
